About this curriculum

The Small Bites curriculum is designed to teach students about nutrition and healthy cooking through a series of eight lessons combining nutrition and knife-free cooking. The lessons are taught by a trained Common Threads educator and support the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in Math and English Language Arts (ELA). The in-school lessons give students the opportunity to connect math and ELA to hands-on experiences that will give them tools to live longer, healthier lives. Graduates of this class will be able to make their own healthy snack at home using skills they learned in Small Bites!

Each lesson is accompanied by a grade level appropriate extension lesson that teachers can use to continue healthy learning in the classroom and deepen the students’ connection to the CCSS. The curriculum also includes grading rubrics that will ensure that the evaluation of student work is consistent and meaningful. Depending on the class schedule, the lessons can be taught in eight one-hour classes or sixteen thirty- minute classes.
